At around 6:30 PM on Wednesday, November 13, 1974, 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo, Jr. burst into Henry's Bar in Amityville, Long Island, New York and declared: "You got to help me! I think my mother and father are shot!" DeFeo and a small group of people went to 112 Ocean Avenue, which was located not far from the bar, and found that DeFeo's parents were indeed dead. One of the group, Joe Yeswit, made an emergency call to the Suffolk County Police, who searched the house and found that six members of the same family were dead in their beds.
The Amityville house is one of the most famous haunting cases in the world. Ronald DeFeo’s brutality captivated the world for a brief moment, but mass murderers are soon forgotten as another twisted monster comes along, ups the ante, and makes us all forget about the last one. But we didn’t forget the house.
The Amityville story has been told, fictionalized, and retold again in books, magazine articles, and movies for almost 30 years now.
The property was once owned by a Ireland family. At some point the land was divided-up, with this one narrow lot being sold by the Irelands to John and Catherine Moynahan. There was another house originally built in the spot of the famous home. The original house on that land (built in 1890) was moved up the block, providing the Moynahan family with a place to live while their new Dutch Colonial home was being constructed by local builder Jesse Purdy.
The house still stands in the same location today as it had since it was built in 1924. There have been some slight modifications to it over the years.
Listed for $1.15 million, the picturesque and pristine home looks very different from the home where Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six family members as they slept in 1974Believe it or not, the people that lived in the house recently said the house is not haunted. Of course it is up for sale so that makes you wonder. I dont think that I could live in a house that had been dipicted as being the gateway to hell, that just gives me the Heevie Jeevies.
